Why Gov Comms Academy Exists

Public institutions operate in an environment of constant scrutiny, fast-moving information and rising public expectations. Leaders and communicators are often asked to explain complex decisions, respond to crises and maintain public confidence, sometimes with incomplete information and very little time.

Gov Comms Academy was created to close the gap between communications theory and the realities of public service. Our programs turn firsthand experience into practical preparation, helping professionals develop the judgment, tools and confidence to communicate clearly when the stakes are high.

The goal is not simply to help people speak more effectively. It is to help public institutions become more prepared, transparent and trusted.

Dionna Smith

Founder and Lead Instructor, Gov Comms Academy

Dionna Smith’s career demonstrates the range and power of strategic communication. She studied communications at Howard University and earned her bachelor’s degree in Media Arts from Tulane University. Throughout her career, she has used communication to recruit talent, strengthen employer brands, lead human resources and diversity initiatives, shape public affairs strategies and advise senior executives.

After more than a decade applying communications in corporate environments, Dionna transitioned into public affairs in the K–12 education technology industry and later into local government. Her experience spans executive communications, media relations, crisis response, public engagement, speechwriting, major events, marketing campaigns and large-scale video productions.

She has led countless press conferences, worked with local, regional, national and global media outlets, and guided leaders through some of their most visible and challenging moments. She is also the bestselling author of On the Record: A Practical Guide to Crisis Communication for Executives and Public Leaders.

The Academy grew from the impact Dionna witnessed while training employees, mentoring emerging communicators and helping executives find the clarity and confidence to lead publicly. Gov Comms Academy allows her to share those lessons more broadly, preparing professionals and institutions to communicate with purpose, credibility and care.
